Dreams

Oh, it’s much too hard. The stress is too great.
9-5 is exhausting, and you mustn’t be late.
Backbreaking labor as you lift and you shove,
All for a paycheck that is never enough.

As a child you dream of your career as an adult.
You’ll do great things; With many you’ll consult.
But often our dreams are dashed in the courses of life.
Meaningless jobs you hate, full of conflict and strife.

You once wanted to save the world. What happened to your dream?
Now you claw through life, you plot and you scheme.
Maybe someday you can pursue the career that you want.
Maybe you’ve given up, the dream now a curse that’ll haunt.

Why is life so hard and unfair as you’re turned down again.
Each interview tears your heart in half; Rejection sets in.
Why did you get a degree when you can’t find a job in the field?
To other peoples’ dreams you toil and yield.

This is the lot of many day in and day out.
Unsatisfied with their place but hit with a dismal clout.
Like a punch to the face, life hits them another time.
Their dreams all forgotten; They struggle for each dime.

Don’t give up on your dreams, even if the time is not right.
Keep trying and planning, keep your goals ever in sight.
Life is too short to let it waste away in jobs that you hate.
It may be a struggle, but your dreams you can make.

Hold onto that hope that someday you’ll succeed.
Your dreams aren’t just for you; They’re what the world needs.
Be a doctor, a lawyer, a mechanic, or more.
Keep on trying to get your foot in the door.

Someday you’ll get there, even if the struggle is long.
Don’t give up now. To give up would be wrong.
So blessings on your journey as you reach for the sky.
All you can do is continue to try.
