The Angel

For years I prayed for a sign from God up above,
To show me an angel to prove to me His love.
But my eyes never saw any miraculous deed.
In my heart I held doubt that God would even heed.

To me I felt that if God existed and He loved me as He said,
He should answer my prayers and prove what I had read.
Miracles could happen if only I had faith.
Well, just one simple miracle, just one angel someday.

But it never happened, and many prayers grew cold.
Prayers asked for healing for others grew old.
I fully believed God wouldn’t give me anything for which I prayed.
I determined I was a curse when in the ground a friend laid.

I had prayed for his healing from cancer and felt God would surely help.
I prayed in earnest and my younger heart didn’t hold a doubt.
But God didn’t heal him, and I didn’t know how to feel.
Either my faith wasn’t good enough or God wasn’t real.

Feeling I deserved an answer I asked God to show me an angel.
Surely some sort of miracle would banish the doubts from hell.
But years went by, and no miracles would I see.
Others told stories of miracles but why not me?

Was I not good enough to do wonders through prayer?
Do I understand how God works? Certainly I don’t dare.
There were times when I thought He was showing me His love.
And then other times I would doubt He even saw me from above.

But one night that all changed when I had a vivid dream.
I saw an angel before me, and I fell upon my knees.
You will never understand unless you experience it too.
I fell upon my knees because it was all that I could do.

I fell flat upon my face; I could hardly breathe.
The brightness from this angel, I couldn’t even see.
He towered above me and told me “Do not fear”.
Inside I trembled before him because he was so pure.

I felt that I was blemised, and I would burn up on the spot.
Nothing could stand before him, certainly I could not.
His presence burned within me and with it fear arose.
But as he spoke in love, awe began to grow.

I finally understood why I’d never seen an angel with bare eyes.
God was surely sparing me from my own demise.
You see, if I’d seen an angel with my sinful ways,
I’d pass out liked the guards at Jesus’ tomb in olden days.

When Jesus rose from the dead, angels were sent.
Their presence burned so brightly, the guards fell, almost dead.
In my dream it was so vivid, I fell over and couldn’t breathe.
The presence of His purity I just couldn’t even believe.

So, God in His mighty love gave me what I could bare.
Had it been before my bare eyes, I’m not sure I’d still be here.
You can call me crazy, that is fine with me.
But I know the dream was meant for me to see.

I felt God’s burning presence and understood why sin will cease.
He clenses us just by His radiance, a new life to lease.
He shielded Moses from His face when He appeared to him
He shielded others too when He left His throne and became a man.

God can’t walk before us, since we fell from grace long ago.
It’s not that He doesn’t want to, it’s simply His full precsence we can’t know.
Not in our sinful condition, we’d burn up in His sight.
But He loves us so much, that He hides from us His might.

So, why didn’t He answer my prayers when I’d asked for healing for my friend?
I do not know for sure, but I know He knows what’s best in the end.
I also know my friend lived in God’s daily love.
I imagine them holding hands in heaven up above.

I fully expect to see him again when in heaven I stand.
God will have the answers as to why he left this land.
But I’m happy with my miracle and I don’t dare to ask,
To see an angel with bare eyes, I’m not up to the task.

My dream will stand forever etched within my thoughts.
I know it was from God, it’s only something He can wrought.
Nothing has come close to feeling the presence of God,
As that night that I lay in my bed, with sleep I did nod.

So, you can ask for miracles, just be careful of what you pray.
Be aware that sometimes God doesn’t answer in mercy some days.
Other times He’ll grant us the things for which we ask.
Our job is to trust Him, this is our simple task.
