Am I Good Enough Yet?
Mother, do you hate me still, or do you love me yet?
Have I proven I’m good enough. Have I won the bet?
How many degrees must I hold before you’ll be proud?
Will you ever boast with pride to all those around?
Inside I’m still a little girl. The pain of rejection hurts.
Acceptance I’m still looking for. Is your answer curt?
Will you tell me to go away. To never seek your love?
What have I done to wrong you? What is this a result of?
As a young child I craved your love but never got enough.
Your outward character was always cold and rough.
Why did you berate me and tell everone lies?
No one ever believed me; they saw me through your eyes.
The physical abuse was awful, but I grew used to pain.
But the pain of being hated just never was the same.
Nothing I did brought happiness, only disappointment and scorn.
Comments about my incompetence, to this day I morn.
Mother, am I good enough yet? I have done my best.
I’ve tried to be a good person, better than the rest.
Mother, will you accept me, though perfect I am not.
Your love and acceptance would mean an awful lot.
