True Friends

‘Good friends are hard to find.’
That’s how the saying goes.
They are a special kind,
That stay near when you feel low.

Those who suffer from mental illness,
Know how hard it is to find friends.
Their relationships are often a mess,
And frequently come to an end.

People seldom understand the struggles,
That plague those with mental illness.
Worn friendships often buckle,
And patience grows less and less.

When you suffer from a disease,
Such as cancer or the flu,
Sympathy flows out with ease.
Love and kindness are ever true.

Mental illness is hard to now,
For most of the world you see.
Silence and frustration also,
Make it hard to heed.

If they don’t understand you,
People often withdraw away.
It’s not that they don’t love you.
They seldom know what to say.

They think they can’t help you feel better.
They hope that time will heal.
They want things to be like they were.
Happiness for you to feel.

But in silence they draw away.
Because they feel they cannot help.
We wish that they would stay.
Loneliness is often felt.

But there are true friends that stick close.
Though they can be hard to find.
When you find them cherish them the most.
Treasure them in your mind.

True friends may not understand your trials,
But they will never leave you lonely.
Their love will span the miles.
Care and concern you’ll always see.

So, take care of your friendships.
Don’t treat them with neglect.
Selfishness you should nip.
Love and care you can select.

Mental illness is hard enough,
But with friends it’s easier to deal.
When friends treat you with true love,
The kindness helps you heal.

They see your entire person.
Not just what struggles you face.
They value your contributions.
No one else can take your place.

So don’t be afraid to love.
Even if you’ve been hurting.
A blessing from above.
True friendship yearning.

Blessings to you friend on your journey.
Healing may you find.
May your days be bright and sunny.
To yourself always be kind.
